Rick Perry emphasized his anti-abortion bona fides Saturday evening at the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition Conference in Des Moines. The event lasted nearly four hours and included speeches by all GOP presidential candidates except Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry emphasized his Christian worldview during his turn to speak:
You don't have to listen to my words, you can look at my record. I have a record of appointing strict constructionists [to the Texas courts] who uphold the law who will defend our founding principles. Being pro-life is not a matter of campaign convenience; it is a core conviction.
Then Perry dropped the bomb on Herman Cain, who earlier this week sent confusing signals about his pro-life convictions.
It is a liberal canard to say that 'I am personally pro-life, but that government should stay out of the decision.' If that is your view, you are not pro-life. You are pro-having-your-cake-and-eating-it-too."
After giving a moving personal testimony of his own Christian faith, Perry said that he believes in a personal God who allows even the most imperfect among us to serve Him. "And if you are familiar with my past debate performances, you know that I am far from perfect," he joked.
The Right Scoop culled the Perry speech and the Perry Q&A from the C-SPAN feed where you can watch just the Rick Perry portions. To see all of the candidates who were there, here is the direct link to the C=SPAN video archive.
