There is an incorrect assumption that Rick Perry appears weaker on immigration than his Republican challengers. But his challengers have not experienced a leadership role in U.S. border security. Perry's stance against Texas adopting an Arizona-style immigration law was initially troubling to many conservatives even though his point is that it would be better to force the federal government to enforce the border since that is one of their primary responsibilities. A true statement, but one easier said than done.
Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio defends the Arizona-Mexico border and has become a thought leader on implementing an immigration policy that is considered "hard line" by progressives. He has visited with all of the GOP candidates and determined that he needed to get out in front to endorse Rick Perry early because of Perry's experience with the issue and his campaign's proposed immigration policy. Sheriff Joe found none better. Here is the speech where Arpaio endorses Perry, and then Perry's remarks on what a national immigration policy under President Rick Perry will look like:
The video below is from the 2010 gubernatorial race, where Rick Perry speaks about his record on illegal immigration. Since that video was created, Texas under Rick Perry has spent $400 million on securing the U.S.-Texas border.
