There is an incorrect assumption that Rick Perry appears weaker on immigration than his Republican challengers. But his challengers have not experienced a leadership role in U.S. border security. Perry's stance against Texas adopting an Arizona-style immigration law was initially troubling to many conservatives even though his point is that it would be better to force the federal government to enforce the border since that is one of their primary responsibilities. A true statement, but one easier said than done.
Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio defends the Arizona-Mexico border and has become a thought leader on implementing an immigration policy that is considered "hard line" by progressives. He has visited with all of the GOP candidates and determined that he needed to get out in front to endorse Rick Perry early because of Perry's experience with the issue and his campaign's proposed immigration policy.
